Mark MonsonProfessional Electrical Engineer |
Mark
is a dedicated and versatile electrical
and electronic engineer with over 30 years of widespread and diverse
experience behind him. He is a practical, innovative, and creative
problem solver, who excels in seeing the ‘big picture,’ thinking
outside the box and breaking new professional ground. Mark has worked on many projects (both large and small) throughout the years and has continually demonstrated that his ideas are not only highly effective, but they are also cost effective and easy to implement. He has a flair for finding new and improved approaches and solutions to old problems, whilst ensuring that all variables and potential problems are identified and addressed early on; meaning projects are launched with potential issues having been identified and addressed. While Mark trained as a traditional engineer, to IPENZ registration standard, he regards the practice of project planning and management as a core, foundational skill that is at the heart of the engineering discipline. Mark’s expertise includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:
Mark also holds EWRB practising licence as an Electrical Engineer. EDUCATION
PROJECTS
Telecoms Mesh Networking: while still an undergraduate, Mark devised a solution to an ongoing series of network outages caused by overloading of the Telecom NZ Ltd central switching hub in Christchurch. He proposed deloading the central switch by means of some changes to the switching bearer network, which also had the desirable effect of transforming the network from star to mesh configuration. This novel schema became a national standard, and in Christchurch it saved some $18M. Central Plains Irrigation Pumping Automation: Mark joined this project at the point where automation code was required. Owing to the hardware choice, a near-greenfield approach to the coding was required, where elements of a water-pumping library of PLC functions had to be ported to a different brand and type of PLC hardware. Code (PLC, HMI, Scada) was written for 10 pumping stations ranging from 2-10 pumps each, the code was deployed and commissioned on time and within budget, and the system ran reliably for two seasons before it was upgraded. Advanced Temperature Sensing for Panel Heaters: When shipping fats, oils, and other substances in solid form, they need to be reheated for use once delivered. A problem had been identified where the heaters being used sometimes developed hot-spots, which could lead to catastrophic failures. Mark designed, built and demonstrated a method of addressing this issue by was of a large array of inexpensive temperature sensors. He also mapped out a method for manufacturing this array. The system was capable of easily and reliably detecting a hot coffee cup placed at any point in a 1.2m square, monitored by a 64-element sensor array. |
